Explanation of P3 Autocost Rules
Status: Reviewed
Version(s): 3.x

Problem: Explanation of Autocost Rules
Fix:

When marked, the activity抯 schedule percent complete is automatically linked with its remaining duration. When you update either one, P3 calculates the other.Uncheck if your activity抯 percent complete does not reflect the activity’s remaining duration.

If unchecked, finish dates are calculated based off of the remaining durations, ignoring percent complete.Earned value and actual to date are calculated using percent complete, ignoring the remaining durations.

This rule tells P3 whether to adjust the units per time period when the Estimate to Complete or the Remaining duration is changed.

When unchecked, the units per time period is recalculated based on an updated remaining duration and/or estimate to complete.

Estimate to Complete / Remaining Duration = Units per Time period

When checked, the units per time period are frozen, therefore a new estimate to complete is calculated when the remaining duration is changed.

Unites per Time Period * Remaining Duration = Estimate to Complete

New Estimate to Complete + Actual to Date = Estimate at Completion

Subtract will calculate a new estimate to complete when the estimate at completion or the actual to date value changes: (Then a new units per time is calculated)

Estimate at Completion ?Actual to Date = Estimate to Complete

Estimate to Complete / Remaining Duration = Units per Time Period

Note: Best used with a fixed budget, lets you know when you exceed the budget.

Add actual to ETC will calculate a new estimate at completion when the estimate to complete or the actual quantity to date values change. (Best used with a non fixed budget)

Estimate to Complete + Actual to Date = Estimate at Complete

Note: Mark the option, ‘Allow negative ETC‘, if you accept a negative values for estimate to complete. If not checked and the calculated estimate to complete is negative, the value will remain at zero.

Marking any of the check boxes causes the calculations of the budget, actual to date, or the estimate to complete as the product of its unit price (from the resource dictionary) and the quantity, using the following formulas:

Budgeted Quantity * Price per Unit = Budgeted Cost

Actual Quantity to Date * Price per Unit = Actual Cost

Quantity to Complete * Price per Unit = Cost to Complete

Recalculated: Cost to Complete + Actual Cost = Cost at Completion

Having either of these options checked causes P3 to estimate the actual to date as

Budgeted Quantity * Percent Complete = Actual Quantity to Date

Budgeted Cost * Percent Complete = Actual Cost

These calculations are conducted when ever the budget, percent complete, or resource percent complete changes.

Mark the checkbox to set the budget equal to estimate at completion as long as the activity has no progress.

Note: By marking this option the EAC will NOT change if the Budget changes. This option only recalculates the Budget if EAC is changed.

This option specifies whether variance overruns are calculated as a negative or a positive value. If you have budget ?EAC selected, overruns will be negative, if you select EAC ?budget, overruns will be positive.

If unchecked P3 does not calculate Autocost calculations when scheduling, otherwise P3 will calculate the values based on the rules when data changes, either because you make an edit or because the schedule changes the RD of an activity.

Note:  You should mark this option if using Hammocks or Expected Finish constraints.

This option will specify when calculations are to be conducted, either when making changes in each cell in the cost or resource information or when moving from one resource to another.
