Problem: | How to determine the total project percent complete |
Problem: | What is the project percent complete? |
Fix: | There are several methods that can be used to determine the overall percent complete of a project. Method #1. Create a Hammock activity that has a start-to-start relationship with the first activity in the project and a finish-to-finish relationship with the last activity in the project. Then re-schedule the project to get a percent complete for that Hammock activity that will reflect the total project percent complete. This percent complete reflects how far into the project you are based on the Data date and the Start and Finish dates of the project. For example, if the project starts 01JAN and finishes 31DEC and the Data date is 01JUL, the Hammock percent complete would be 50%. For more information on how percent complete is calculated on Hammocks, please see: “How Percent Complete is calculated on a Hammock activity” Method #2. Go to Format, Organize and select Project as the only organization. Then summarize on the project band by either double-clicking the band (“rolling it up”) or going to the Format, Summarize menu option. The project will now be summarized. The Percent complete column will give the percent complete of the project. This method takes into account how much work has been accomplished and how much work has yet to be done based on the individual duration of the activities. It is calculated as follows: (Sum of all the individual ODs) – (Sum of all the individual RDs) For example, if the project starts 01JAN and finishes 31DEC and the Data date is 01JUL, but the majority of the activities happen in DEC as in the above project, the project percent will be less than 50% since much of the work has yet to be completed. |
