How do Constraints affect Activity Dates?
Status: Reviewed
Version(s): 4.0, 4.1, 5.0, 6.0

Problem: How do Constraints affect Activity Dates?
Problem: Which Constraints affect which Dates?
Problem: Which Constraints effect which Dates?
Problem: What Constraints affect the Early Dates?
Problem: What Constraints affect the Late Dates?
Problem: Applied Start on Constraint and the Activity is showing critical.
Fix:

When scheduling, Primavera calculates both Early Dates and Late Dates for each of the Activities.  Early Dates show the Earliest Dates the Activity can Start based on its Relationships and Constraints.  The Late Dates show the latest the Activity can start based on its Relationships, Constraints and/or the End of the Project.  The difference between the Early Dates and Late Dates represent the Total Float of the Activity.  The default setting is to show any Activities with a Total Float of 0 or less as a Critical Activity.

Constraints are designed to affect either the Early or Late Dates or both set of Dates at the same time.  This, in turn, can affect the Total Float and thus the Criticality of the Activity.

Affect Early Dates:

  • Start on or After

  • Finish on or After

  • As Late as Possible (same as Zero Free Float constraint from P3)

Affect Late Dates:

  • Start on or Before

  • Finish on or Before

  • Project must Finish By

Constraints that affect both Early and Late Dates:

  • Mandatory Start

  • Mandatory Finish

  • Expected Finish (changes the activities duration)

  • Start On (same as applying both a Start on or before and a Start on or After)

  • Finish On (same as applying both a Finish on or before and a Finish on or After)
