Problem: How to calculate activity duration as the sum of multiple resource assignment’s durations
Problem: How to calculate the sum of all the resource assignment durations to determine the total hours all resource assignments must work on an activity.
Problem: Activity duration is the duration between the earliest resource start date and the latest resource finish date. It is not the sum of all the resource durations.

For example, the highlighted activity has 2 resources with durations of 5h and 10h, but the activity duration is 10h, not 15h.

Problem: If resources overlap, the Activity duration is not the sum of all the Resource durations.
Fix: If the resources are driving the activity, the Activity duration always represents the time between the earliest resource start and the latest resource finish.

To make the Activity duration the sum of all the Resource durations, all resource assignments must driving and must be working end to end or Finish to Start (not simultaneously).

1. In the Activities View, open Activity Details, Resources tab.

2. Right click on the Resource column heading and select Customize resource columns.  Add the Start, Finish and Drive Activity Dates fields. Make sure that the Drive Activity Dates fields marked for all resources.

3. Change the Start date of the second resource to the day after the Finish of the first resource. In the following example, you would change the second resource to start on Dec 14, 2002.

After changing the start date of the second resource, notice that the activity remaining duration is now 15h.

Note: Changing the resource dates will increase the activity’s duration which will extend the end date of the project. This should only be done if the resources will NOT be working simultaneously.
